A Comsol Case Study
MED Institute, a medical device development research organization, faced the challenge of evaluating the safety of implanted medical devices in MRI environments, specifically the risk of radiofrequency-induced heating that could harm patients. Physical testing was expensive, time-consuming, and could introduce measurement inaccuracies. To address this, they turned to Comsol and its COMSOL Multiphysics® software with add-on modules to perform virtual testing and validation.
Using Comsol's multiphysics simulation software, MED Institute implemented a computational modeling solution to analyze electromagnetic fields and transient heat transfer. This allowed them to efficiently determine worst-case device configurations and replace or augment physical testing. The solution yielded significant results, including FDA qualification of their virtual evaluation tool, which accelerates the product development cycle for their clients, reducing both the time and cost required for safety testing.
