Manufacturing Technology Centre uses Comsol simulation apps to optimize 3D metal printing

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) faced a challenge with the shaped metal deposition (SMD) 3D printing technique, where the intense heat caused metal parts to deform during production. To optimize this process for industrial use, MTC turned to Comsol and used the Application Builder available in COMSOL Multiphysics.

Comsol's solution enabled MTC to build simulation apps that predict the final geometry of a part prior to printing. These apps were shared with colleagues, including team members without simulation experience, to explore different designs and determine the optimal deposition process. This wide-scale optimization helped make the SMD technology ready for the industrial market.
