A Comsol Case Study
Mahindra Two Wheelers, a leading Indian scooter and motorcycle manufacturer, needed to meet strict engine noise and pass-by regulations without sacrificing the desired muffler “rumble” and overall ride quality. To tackle NVH challenges early in the design cycle, they adopted Comsol’s COMSOL Multiphysics simulation tools to model engine, intake, exhaust and muffler acoustics.
Using Comsol, Mahindra performed acoustic-radiation, acoustic transfer function and transmission-loss analyses, then modified cylinder-head ribs, air-filter geometry and muffler pipe length while automating workflows with the Application Builder and API. The simulations cut design iterations and computational time, closely matched experimental results, reduced sound pressure levels in the 800–2000 Hz band, and produced a muffler that increased low-frequency rumble yet met pass-by regulations—delivering clear time and cost savings.
