Lifescan Scotland accelerates blood glucose strip design with Comsol over 3 years

Lifescan Scotland Ltd., a designer and manufacturer of blood glucose monitoring kits, faced the challenge of optimizing its highly engineered test strips to meet goals for faster results, reduced manufacturing costs, and increased accuracy. Historically reliant on simplified analytical methods, the company needed a more powerful way to model the complex electrochemistry and mass diffusion within its products to overcome the limitations of its legacy approaches.

The solution was implemented using COMSOL Multiphysics from vendor Comsol. The software's multiphysics approach, including modules for Heat Transfer and Batteries & Fuel Cells, enabled the development of detailed numerical models that provided a deeper understanding of signal features and the impact of design changes. This allowed for rapid model-based prototyping of alternative geometries and reagent compositions. The simulation results were in good agreement with experimental work, aiding in cost-effective optimization and providing a useful tool for the design and optimization of future products.
