Kostal improves roof module thermal control with Comsol, redirecting 90% of heat to the PCB

Comsol worked with Kostal, an automotive electronics manufacturer, to address design challenges in a premium car's roof module. The challenges included managing thermal behavior, as 90% of generated heat went into the module's PCB, and meeting customer demand for reliable capacitive touch sensors similar to those in mobile devices.

The solution involved using Comsol Multiphysics simulation to model the roof module's thermal performance and the capacitive sensor's sensitivity and electrostatic properties, accounting for variables like different finger sizes and gloves. Comsol simulation was also used to develop an inductive charging system, enabling Kostal to find a coil geometry for cable-free charging that was as efficient as a cable-based system.
