A Comsol Case Study
KMTC (Kornerstone Materials Technology) manufactures high‑alumina cover glass for smartphones and tablets and faced the complex, multiphysics challenge of producing ultrathin, defect‑free sheets via the overflow down‑draw process. To control thickness, viscosity, temperature and avoid surface marks during forming, KMTC turned to Comsol, using COMSOL Multiphysics software to model coupled fluid, structural, thermal and electrical behavior across their melting, platinum channel, and forming systems.
Using Comsol Multiphysics, KMTC built coupled simulations (including Joule heating and frequency‑stationary studies) to compare heating‑tube designs, predict thickness and strain, and validate results against experiments with good agreement; they then converted models into simulation apps and deployed them via COMSOL Server to engineering teams. Comsol’s solution enabled faster optimization before mass production, gave engineers and designers parameterized tools to predict glass state and operating conditions, streamlined the simulation workflow, and improved team efficiency while providing actionable, validated guidance for production.
