A Comsol Case Study
JDR Cables, a designer and manufacturer of subsea umbilical systems for the oil, gas, and renewable energy industries, faced the challenge of analyzing complex cable designs under harsh environmental conditions. They needed to account for deep water pressure, ocean forces, and over 3,000 localized high-contact points within tight-radius reels. To address this, they worked with Comsol, utilizing COMSOL Multiphysics software for stress, fatigue, and thermal analyses.
The solution implemented by Comsol involved importing 3D cable structures into COMSOL Multiphysics via its LiveLink for MATLAB. This allowed JDR Cables and consultants to rapidly explore numerous loading conditions and design variations. The models provided by Comsol cost half as much as physical testing, significantly reduced analysis time, and led to direct reductions in manufacturing costs.
