Italian Institute of Technology boosts electron emission efficiency with Comsol in deep-space and brain-signal simulations

Researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) were working on advancing power generation technologies for extreme environments, including deep-space satellites and biomedical nanoantennas. Their challenge was to overcome inefficiencies in electron emission devices, such as space charge buildup hindering current output, in order to create more efficient and reliable systems.

Using COMSOL Multiphysics® software for simulation, the IIT team modeled photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) cells and nanoantennas. They coupled particle tracing with electrical and thermal models to optimize electrode layouts and successfully tested a positively-charged gate to mitigate space charge, boosting electron extraction. The comprehensive analysis from COMSOL enabled the researchers to determine optimal design parameters, improving current output and power conversion efficiency for their advanced applications.
