The customer, Intellectual Ventures, needed to accelerate its innovation workflow from design to prototype for new inventions. Their challenge was to understand and optimize the behavior of a novel micro-channel regenerative heat exchanger, a device that differs greatly from traditional heat exchangers. They turned to simulation-based engineering using COMSOL Multiphysics from vendor Comsol to address this.

Comsol's multiphysics simulation software enabled the team to model structural, fluid, and thermal effects to optimize efficiency and ensure structural integrity. The solution was integral in testing designs, evaluating materials, and creating designs for the photolithography process used to build a physical prototype. As a result, Intellectual Ventures developed a prototype that achieved a remarkable 98% energy efficiency, a significant improvement over the initial 90% target.
