INSEAN models a 1:8 bulbous bow with Comsol to analyze sonar dome vibration

INSEAN, the National Institute for Studies and Experiments of Naval Architecture in Italy, faced a challenge in determining how structural vibrations from a ship's bulbous bow might interfere with onboard sonar systems. They needed to simulate the interaction between the turbulent boundary layer and the bow to quantify the resulting self-noise. To address this, they turned to simulation software from Comsol.

Using Comsol Multiphysics along with LiveLink™ for Pro/ENGINEER®, INSEAN's team created a detailed full-scale model of the bulbous bow. This solution incorporated the complexity of the composite material and the fluid loads derived from a smaller-scale experimental model. Comsol's technology enabled them to successfully analyze the vibrational response, providing crucial insights into the sonar dome's performance under realistic operating conditions.
