HORIBA Medical improves hematology analysis with COMSOL using a micro aperture-electrode system

The customer, HORIBA Medical, a supplier of medical diagnostic equipment, faced a challenge in optimizing their hematology analyzers. Accurately counting and sorting blood cells using an electrical impedance method was difficult to achieve with physical prototypes alone. They turned to vendor Comsol and used COMSOL Multiphysics software to model the complex physical processes inside their devices.

Using Comsol's simulation software, HORIBA Medical modeled the pressure drop, fluid velocity, heat transfer, and electric fields within a micro aperture-electrode system. The solution identified that hydrodynamic focusing was a powerful technique to improve the accuracy of impedance measurements. As a result, this technique was successfully implemented into one of HORIBA's most advanced hematology analyzers, directly enhancing the device's performance and diagnostic capabilities.
