General Fusion runs hundreds of simulations in less than 24 hours with Comsol

General Fusion is developing Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology to bring clean fusion power to the grid. A major challenge in designing their large-scale demonstration machine, LM26, was predicting the complex magnetomechanical behavior of its solid lithium liner during the high-speed compression process. To solve this, they worked with Comsol and its consulting partner, Veryst Engineering, utilizing the COMSOL Multiphysics software to build a predictive model.

Comsol's multiphysics simulation platform, coupled with material testing expertise from Veryst, enabled General Fusion to accurately model the lithium liner's response. This solution allowed for rapid design iteration and optimization, compressing hundreds of simulations into less than 24 hours instead of weeks. The validated models provided critical insights that led to the successful construction and assembly of LM26, which achieved first plasma in February 2025 as a major step toward fusion conditions.
