A Comsol Case Study
The Gas Technology Institute (GTI), a leader in natural gas research, faced a challenge in improving industry standards for the pipeline squeeze-off procedure, a maintenance technique used to stop gas flow by compressing a pipe. To investigate this, GTI utilized the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, specifically its Structural Mechanics and Nonlinear Structural Materials modules.
Using COMSOL Multiphysics®, the GTI team developed a fully parametric, time-dependent model that incorporated a hybrid mesh, contact analysis, and a custom constitutive model. This solution from Comsol enabled them to accurately simulate and analyze large deformations during the squeeze-off process, which contributed to the development of more effective and accessible pipeline maintenance standards.
