A Comsol Case Study
FUJIFILM Dimatix, Inc., a leading maker of commercial inkjet printheads, needed to design MEMS unimorph diaphragm actuators that maximize deflection, minimize size, and match impedance to tightly coupled fluidic jets so each nozzle can eject droplets with target mass, velocity, and firing frequency. To meet these tight performance and miniaturization goals while reducing cost, FUJIFILM Dimatix, Inc. turned to Comsol and its Multiphysics simulation tools.
Using Comsol Multiphysics, engineers ran a two‑stage modeling workflow: detailed actuator models (including PZT, silicon, electrodes and pressurized pumping chambers) to extract compliance (deflection under pressure) and output (deflection under voltage), then applied those parameters in full jet system models. Comsol’s parameter sweeps and coupled physics allowed FUJIFILM Dimatix, Inc. to optimize actuator/jet coupling, shorten design cycles, and produce updated, smaller actuator designs that meet target droplet mass, velocity and firing frequency—delivering faster development and improved printhead performance.
