A Comsol Case Study
Eurac Research, a research institute based in Italy, faced a challenge in accurately modeling the energy efficiency of complex fenestration systems, such as windows with integrated blinds. The existing ISO standard calculation method treated these 3D structures as simple parallel layers, which affected the accuracy of both optical and thermal modeling. To overcome this, they turned to Comsol and used the COMSOL Multiphysics® software for thermal modeling and fluid flow simulation.
Comsol's solution involved a two-step process where detailed optical modeling from a third-party tool was combined with comprehensive thermal and fluid flow simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics. This approach accurately calculated heat transfer and temperature distribution, which was validated against physical measurements. The results showed strong correspondence, providing Eurac Research with a valuable and accurate tool to assess heat flow and component temperatures, ultimately leading to better designs for energy-efficient buildings and enhanced occupant comfort.
