Etrema Products reduces transducer deformation with Comsol

Comsol's customer, Etrema Products, Inc., designs and manufactures high-precision devices using smart magnetostrictive materials like Terfenol-D. Their challenge was to optimize the design of complex devices such as transducers, which required understanding the interaction between magnetic fields and mechanical deformation in their unique materials.

The solution implemented by Comsol was the use of COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software. This allowed Etrema to move from single-physics models to a coupled multiphysics approach that accurately modeled magnetostriction. This provided a crucial design tool, leading to improved product designs—such as a transducer redesign that showed significantly reduced deformation compared to an initial, severely bending model—and became useful in essentially every stage of product development.
