Dolby Laboratories, a leading developer of audio technologies, faced the challenge of designing ultrathin Dolby Atmos enabled speakers for modern, slim-profile televisions. The key hurdle was achieving a large "sweet spot" coverage area for immersive overhead sound despite the severely restricted space, which compromised the speaker's performance. They turned to Comsol and used the COMSOL Multiphysics software with its Acoustics Module to model and simulate different design concepts prior to physical prototyping.
Using Comsol's acoustics simulation software, Dolby engineers optimized an integrated acoustic reflector to create an asymmetric radiation pattern that efficiently directed sound toward the ceiling. This solution significantly improved the sweet spot coverage area for the immersive audio experience. The simulation results were validated with physical prototypes, confirming that the reflector technology successfully enhanced performance. This allowed Dolby to develop a competitive 1-inch thick speaker design, saving valuable time and resources in the process.
