CERN develops a multiphysics model to prevent LHC quenches with Comsol

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, faced the challenge of preventing quenches—a reversion to a resistive state—in the high-power superconducting magnets of its Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To better understand and prevent these events, CERN utilized numerical simulation from vendor Comsol.

Comsol's solution enabled the development of a multiphysics, multiscale, and multirate numerical simulation model. This model represented the electrodynamics and thermal evolution of a quench event, providing CERN's engineers with critical insights. As a result, Comsol helped CERN take significant steps toward preventing quenches and ensuring the stable operation of the LHC.
