Boston Scientific Corporation simulates stent drug release in 2 hours with Comsol

Boston Scientific Corporation, a medical device company, faced the challenge of understanding and improving the design of drug-eluting stents to prevent tissue regrowth following stent insertion. To better analyze the controlled release of medication from the stent coating, they turned to simulation software from the vendor Comsol.

Using COMSOL Multiphysics with its Optimization Module, the researchers at Boston Scientific developed a detailed pore-shell model of the stent coating. Comsol's solution enabled them to simulate the drug release mechanism and refine key design parameters, such as polymer shell thickness, that were difficult to determine experimentally. The results confirmed the intended fast-and-slow release profile, providing critical insights that help improve stent design to more effectively prevent restenosis.
