Abbott improves LVAD design with Comsol multiphysics simulation

Comsol's customer, Abbott, faced the challenge of designing and improving complex left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) for heart failure patients. Their development efforts required a deep understanding of biocompatibility and device performance, which is difficult to characterize through experimental studies alone.

Comsol provided the solution through its multiphysics simulation software, COMSOL Multiphysics®. Abbott used it to model the device's magnetically levitated rotor and turbulent blood flow, investigate wireless power transfer, and evaluate structural integrity. This allowed Abbott to accurately characterize the LVAD's fluid dynamics, power supply, and thermal management, thereby enhancing device safety and performance to improve patient outlook and quality of life.
