ABB develops split-core sensors 4x faster with Comsol

ABB, a major power grid technology company, faced the challenge of designing advanced instrument transformers and sensors that could withstand damaging very fast transient overvoltages (VFTO) and operate in submersible underground environments. To achieve this, they needed to account for a complex set of multiphysics phenomena during the design process.

Using multiphysics simulation from Comsol, specifically the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, ABB was able to optimize their designs virtually. This allowed them to create a new dry type of insulation resistant to VFTO and a finalized, standards-compliant submersible split-core sensor. The solution enhanced their development process, saving time and computational resources through features like geometric symmetry, and provided the optimized results necessary for maintaining power grid stability and protection.
