ABB Alamo simulates thousands of volts with Comsol for smart grid-ready tap changers

The customer, ABB Alamo, a transformer components expert, faced the challenge of redesigning their tap changers to be smart grid-ready. Their specific problem was designing insulation capable of withstanding the dielectric stress of thousands of volts to prevent material or surface breakdown. They used COMSOL Multiphysics software with LiveLink™ for Creo™ Parametric to address this.

COMSOL provided the solution by enabling ABB to import and adjust their CAD geometry for high-quality meshing and large-scale batch simulation. This allowed ABB to run dielectric stress simulations based on actual field conditions, which advanced the design of their smart grid-ready tap changers.
