Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed), a $15+ billion financial institution serving over a million members worldwide, needed reliable, 24/7 application availability for critical Hogan financial systems written in COBOL and some Assembler. Facing planned z/OS upgrades, PenFed discovered its existing debugger could not guarantee compatibility and had functional limitations (for example, it didn’t support the common “Go Back” statement), forcing source changes that risked production errors and slowed problem resolution.

PenFed replaced the tool with Compuware Xpediter, a fully z/OS-compatible debugger that lets developers step through code, set exact data conditions, and visually confirm execution without altering source modules. Xpediter is used daily, accelerating root-cause identification, eliminating missed deadlines, and drastically cutting troubleshooting time (one task dropped from 2–3 days to two hours), enabling the team to close production issues as they are reported.
