Standard Bank Makes Digital and Mainframe DevOps Advancements with Compuware Topaz and ISPW

Standard Bank, a major international financial services group based in South Africa, relies on the mainframe for roughly 80% of its processing and as the system of record underpinning its digital transformation. As the bank pushed toward Agile, DevOps and CI/CD, the mainframe team faced cultural, process and tooling barriers—limited modernization and governance, poor source-code management, weak toolchain integration, slow deployments and inadequate testing—that threatened to slow digitization.

Standard Bank implemented Compuware Topaz (Topaz Workbench) and ISPW to modernize mainframe development, automate processes, and extend the DevOps toolchain. The solutions delivered automation and governance, improved code visibility, integrated testing and deployment automation (including rollback), and Sonar-based quality checks; using Compuware’s ISPW migration service the bank moved 61 applications and ~395,760 active components with minimal disruption. The initiative enabled “Agile at scale,” faster, higher-quality deployments, a major cultural shift among mainframe developers, and became one of the organization’s most successfully executed projects.
