Case Study: Vedanta develops the world’s largest polymer flood with Computer Modelling Group’s STARS simulation

A Computer Modelling Group Case Study

Vedanta boosts oil recovery 7-15% with Computer Modelling Group

Vedanta Ltd., the operator of the Mangala oil field in India, faced the challenge of a steep production decline from a conventional waterflood due to the reservoir's poor water-oil mobility ratio. To improve oil recovery, Vedanta turned to vendor Computer Modelling Group and used their STARS reservoir simulator to investigate the potential of a complex chemical enhanced oil recovery (cEOR) process.

Using CMG's STARS simulator, Vedanta successfully history-matched coreflood experiments to design and optimize both polymer and alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flood pilots. The simulation results, provided by Computer Modelling Group, gave Vedanta the confidence to scale the project into the world's largest polymer flood, which achieved an incremental oil recovery of 7-8% and led to a successful $600 million full-field development.
