A Computer Modelling Group Case Study
Computer Modelling Group worked with Zargon Oil & Gas on the Little Bow Upper Manville I field in southern Alberta, a mature waterflooded conventional reservoir with significant unrecovered oil remaining. Zargon’s challenge was to determine whether an Alkali-Surfactant-Polymer (ASP) flood could mobilize the trapped oil and improve recovery, and to use simulation to test the viability of the process before field implementation. The vendor’s STARS reservoir simulator was used for the study.
Computer Modelling Group used STARS to history match lab corefloods and field data, then optimize the ASP flood design with CMOST by varying chemical concentrations, slug sizes, and injector-producer placement. The optimized plan delivered a predicted 27.2% incremental oil production and a $200 million NPV, with full-field ASP simulation increasing the recovery factor from 30% to 57.2%. After implementation, the field data closely matched the simulation, validating the approach and demonstrating the value of Computer Modelling Group’s modeling and optimization tools.
