Innovative Optimization Method Increases Rate of Success to 91% on a Low Salinity Waterflood Development Plan

Computer Modelling Group helped a leading oil and gas company address the challenge of designing a low salinity waterflood development plan under significant geological uncertainty. The company needed a better way to predict reservoir performance and reduce risk in an oil-wet reservoir where clay distribution could strongly affect recovery, and it used CMG’s CMOST AI with reservoir simulators such as IMEX, GEM, and STARS to evaluate the development options.

Computer Modelling Group implemented a robust optimization workflow that generated and ranked 100+ geological realizations, then optimized well locations across representative cases to maximize recovery factor. Compared with nominal optimization, the robust approach reduced scatter, improved the probability of success, and raised the success rate to 91% versus 61%, while increasing the chance of achieving a recovery factor above the target threshold.
