Case Study: Colombia’s Middle Magdalena Valley Refinery achieves higher oil recovery and CO₂ storage with Computer Modelling Group’s WAG CO₂ simulation

A Computer Modelling Group Case Study

Colombia’s Middle Magdalena Valley Refinery boosts oil recovery 22% with Computer Modelling Group

The refinery in Colombia's Middle Magdalena Valley, a customer of Computer Modelling Group, faced the challenge of storing over 100 million standard cubic feet of CO₂ per day while also increasing oil recovery. This volume exceeded the capacity of any single field, and differences in well spacing and reservoir pressure across the basin meant a coordinated, multi-field strategy had to be developed and tested through simulation rather than relying on analog methods.

Computer Modelling Group used its GEM compositional simulation software to model various injection scenarios, ultimately determining that a Water Alternating Gas (WAG) CO₂ approach was optimal. This solution was forecasted to increase total oil recovery by 22% in the selected field and store the massive volume of CO₂ across the connected basin. The models confirmed long-term containment security through 2050, providing a methodology that could be replicated to achieve the project's dual objectives.
