CEPSA Evaluates Application of Foam Injection to Mature WAG Field

CEPSA, a major oil company operating a giant mature field in northern Africa, needed a way to better manage high gas-oil-ratio (GOR) and gas channeling under a miscible water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection strategy. CEPSA worked with Computer Modelling Group and used GEM reservoir simulation software to evaluate whether foam injection could help control gas production limits and improve late-life field performance.

Computer Modelling Group supported CEPSA through laboratory testing and compositional numerical simulation of foam performance, including fine-grid sector modeling and history-matched full-field sector studies. The results showed foam could reduce GOR, increase oil production, and delay the onset of limiting GOR by one year, while also improving sweep efficiency in high-permeability channels; in the larger sector model, two producers benefited from the SAG conversion and showed incremental oil production.
