Case Study: Met Office boosts weather service capacity with Computacenter and IBM mainframe upgrade

A Computacenter Case Study

Preview of the Met Office Case Study

Met Office safeguards millions of daily forecasts with scalable mainframe environment designed by Computacenter and IBM

The Met Office, the UK's National Meteorological Service, faced the challenge of processing over 200 million daily weather observations to support its forecasting services. Their existing mainframe was often at maximum capacity, impacting service delivery and limiting their ability to support new workloads and a powerful new supercomputer. To ensure business continuity and support future growth, they partnered with vendor Computacenter for an infrastructure upgrade.

Computacenter, working with IBM, designed and implemented a new, highly scalable mainframe environment featuring two IBM z13 LinuxOne systems. This solution provided over 35% more capacity, enabling the Met Office to process vastly greater data volumes faster and more efficiently. The successful implementation, which Computacenter helped de-risk, safeguards the delivery of millions of daily forecasts, supports new digital initiatives, and has reduced the total cost of ownership.
