A Commvault Case Study
Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), a New Zealand tertiary institution with nearly 12,500 students and rapidly growing data (about 10 TB/year), faced limits with its legacy backup tool: poor visibility of data assets, long backup windows that consumed technician time, heavy reliance on tape, and increasing risk of disparate sources and potential data loss. SIT needed a more holistic, future-proof data management and disaster‑recovery approach across its multiple campuses and heavily virtualized environment.
Commvault’s unified platform (data protection, VM management, source‑side de‑duplication, archiving, IntelliSnap and OnePass) delivered hourly snapshots, a 15‑minute RPO for key databases, replicated backups to Christchurch, and automated tiering from disk to tape. The rollout cut backup management from half a day to about 20 minutes, shortened backup windows, boosted disk usage, improved recovery confidence and visibility, and established a tested business‑continuity and DR capability that significantly reduced enterprise risk.
