A Commvault Case Study
Richardson International, Canada’s largest privately owned agribusiness, runs a fully virtualized IT environment supporting about 1,750 employees across two data centers and dozens of remote sites. The company struggled with an aging IBM TSM backup setup and multiple point products that delivered poor VMware integration, unreliable deduplication, long backup windows and constant manual intervention—requiring the equivalent of a full-time staffer to keep backups running.
Richardson replaced TSM and SyncSort with CommVault Simpana, deploying Virtual Server Agents that leverage VMware’s vStorage API and integrate with its Dell Compellent SAN, along with source-side deduplication and centralized secondary copies. The unified platform eliminated separate tools, removed remote tape jobs, simplified management (freeing approximately one FTE), improved backup/recovery performance and support, and—combined with capacity licensing—delivered operational efficiency and a projected nine-month ROI.
