Iren Energia, a leading Italian multi-utility headquartered in Torino, faced a growing data protection problem after migrating to VMware ESXi: its custom script-based backup process could not scale to 450 virtual machines across 30 physical servers. Backups were manual, not centrally managed, prone to failure after the virtualization upgrade, and time-consuming to restore, leaving the IT team struggling to protect both virtual and physical environments consistently.

Iren deployed Commvault Simpana (with Virtual Server Agent and Endpoint Protection) to centralize and automate backups. The single-console solution cut a weekend-long backup window to just 2–3 hours for a 10 TB incremental of 200 VMs, enabled daily backups, simplified restores (including single-file restores), and delivered intuitive, centralized reporting; an endpoint pilot ran smoothly and archive capabilities are being planned for long-term retention.
