Commvault Enables Council Partnership to Consolidate, Unify and Virtualise

Xentrall is a joint public‑sector ICT partnership serving Stockton‑on‑Tees and Darlington councils, supporting hundreds of services across dozens of sites. It needed to standardise and consolidate two councils’ disparate IT estates and datacentres into a single virtual environment, manage daily backups of dispersed physical servers, archive 6,000+ mailboxes and retain sensitive data for up to 70 years to meet compliance requirements.

Xentrall deployed the Commvault data platform and a new virtual infrastructure (Nimble SAN, Cisco servers, Nexsan backup target over 10 Gb iSCSI), migrating 400+ servers and centralising storage, backup and archiving. The solution now protects ~400 VMs and 40 physical servers to disk, delivers fast restores (server backups in ~10 minutes), provides file and email archiving with instant recall, and—through deduplication and upgrades—reduced the data footprint dramatically (from >200 TB to 11 TB) while saving over 24 TB of tier‑1 disk and avoiding additional SAN procurement, all managed from a single pane of glass.
