A Commvault Case Study
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) is a large state agency serving millions of Californians and maintaining employment records for more than 17 million workers. Faced with laborious, non‑auditable manual eDiscovery processes, rapidly growing storage costs and the need to minimize downtime and legal risk, EDD sought a centralized, integrated solution to automate data collection, preservation and search across desktops, servers and email.
EDD deployed CommVault Simpana—including Backup & Recovery, Archive, Search, deduplication and Storage Resource Management—to centralize and automate eDiscovery, enable one‑click legal holds and index content for fast, auditable searches. The rollout delivered up to 87% data reduction, shrank eDiscovery result sets, cut total eDiscovery costs by about half (projected nearly $1M over five years), eliminated tape‑handling costs, reduced attorney review hours dramatically and lowered outsourcing by 75%, while improving speed, accuracy and scalability.
