Waltham Forest Council - Customer Case Study

Waltham Forest Council faced significant public opposition and the complex challenge of engaging its community to build consensus for a large-scale 'Mini Holland' active travel project aimed at reducing car dependency. To ensure the right infrastructure was built, they needed to understand residents' needs and overcome initial protests and a 6,000-signature petition against the scheme. The council used the Commonplace platform to facilitate this crucial public engagement.

Using Commonplace's Design Feedback tool, the council gathered targeted input from over 15,000 residents, successfully engaging a key demographic of people under 40. The rich data collected informed the project's design and helped secure funding. The results were transformative: the delivered project included 22km of segregated cycle lanes, 100 junction changes, and 700 new trees. Commonplace enabled outcomes that included residents walking and cycling 41 more minutes per week and an estimated increase of 6 weeks in life expectancy for local children.
