A Commonplace Case Study
Thornsett, the developer of Mosaic Place and the Purley Baptist Centre, faced strong local opposition to a proposed new tower in a low-rise area — including a 4,000-signature petition — and needed to demonstrate how the scheme’s benefits would outweigh concerns and make the proposal clear to residents. To address this challenge they engaged Commonplace, using its online consultation platform to run an open, pre-planning engagement with the community.
Commonplace helped Thornsett present the masterplan in themed sections, add interactive map viewpoints and before-and-after visuals, and update designs in response to feedback, building credibility and mobilising supporters. The evidence of high-quality engagement produced by Commonplace contributed to Croydon Council’s planning committee resolving to grant permission (6–4) subject to a Section 106 agreement, showing a measurable planning approval outcome despite earlier opposition.
