Assuring Secure Public and Private Wi-Fi Services Across a Complex Network of Ferries and Ports for CalMac

CalMac Ferries Ltd, one of Scotland’s largest transport operators, worked with Commissum to secure a new free public Wi‑Fi rollout across 31 ferries and 57 ports and slipways. The challenge was to deliver a seamless guest Wi‑Fi experience while protecting internal systems, other users, and the service itself from attacks or disruption, including testing on active ferries in difficult sea conditions.

Commissum carried out internal and external network assessments across ferries and ports, then delivered a detailed report with prioritized remediation guidance and follow-up retesting. The re-test confirmed the vulnerabilities had been addressed, and CalMac successfully launched a safe, secure, and resilient guest Wi‑Fi service, rolling it out across nearly half of its 200-mile network for passengers to use.
