Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Scales Service Footprint with Comcast Business

Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), a nonprofit collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh that provides high-performance computing and the Three Rivers Optical Exchange (3ROX) network for research and education, needed a service provider with a broader regional fiber footprint to extend connectivity to several more rural colleges and universities that lacked sufficient local infrastructure.

PSC selected Comcast Business Ethernet Virtual Private Line—a 10 Gbps link parceled into eight 1 Gbps EVPLs—to deliver private, high-performance connections from 3ROX to eight AICUP member institutions. The solution provided cost-effective access to fiber in rural areas, enabled secure, high-capacity data transmission to PSC’s supercomputers and Data Supercell storage, and gave the schools direct access to advanced research and educational resources.
