Case Study: Montreal Internet Exchange (QIX) achieves faster, more robust Canadian Internet with Cologix

A Cologix Case Study

Preview of the Montreal Internet Exchange (QIX) Case Study

The Montreal Internet Exchange (QIX) delivers faster, higher-performing Internet access, while working towards a more robust Internet across all of Canada

Montreal Internet Exchange (QIX) needed to improve Internet performance in Quebec by keeping traffic local and reducing costly, latency‑adding detours through major hubs. Launched April 23, 2013 with support from RISQ and Cologix, QIX established core and secondary peering nodes inside Cologix’s 1250 and 625 René‑Lévesque Boulevard data centres to provide neutral, settlement‑free interconnection for ISPs, content and hosting providers.

Cologix’s colocation and interconnection hosting allowed QIX to implement local multilateral and bilateral peering, cutting IP transit costs and improving speed and security. The exchange now serves 40+ peering networks, has over 180 Gbps of deployed capacity, and sustained peaks above 25 (max inbound 25.28 G / max outbound 22.48 G) with current inbound/outbound around 18.90 G and 17.53 G — delivering measurable traffic growth, lower costs and better end‑user performance.
