How NetApp’s business-led approach to data governance has stood the test of time

NetApp, a Fortune 500 global technology company with about 10,000 employees, partnered with Collibra beginning in 2010 to tackle companywide inefficiencies in data governance — including more than 50 siloed data dictionaries spread across spreadsheets, documents and SharePoint. To address these challenges NetApp adopted Collibra’s data governance platform and business glossary as the foundation for a business-led, federated approach to managing data definitions and ownership.

Using Collibra, NetApp consolidated its scattered dictionaries into a single business glossary, established a federated governance model with more than 160 data stewards, and drove adoption through executive sponsorship, semi-annual reviews, onboarding programs and a “find a definition” homepage widget. The Collibra-powered program improved consistency and discoverability of data across the company and delivered measurable impact — usage of the glossary rose more than 200% after the widget launch — enabling trusted decision-making across NetApp.
