SingleMind Consulting is a Portland-based technology consultancy (founded 2004, 8 employees) that helps clients with system integrations, application development, and database design. In 2006 they were contracted by a large higher-education publisher to move toward Java-based educational software, but the client had business goals without concrete technical requirements—an “I’ll know it when I see it” situation that called for a structured, iterative approach.

SingleMind ran a CollabNet Certified ScrumMaster course with the client, the client contact became Product Owner, and the team used Scrum sprints to refine requirements and deliver working software quickly. The project finished on time and on budget, the client adopted Scrum across the organization, SingleMind won follow-on work, and the firm now favors Scrum over waterfall for greater clarity, predictable delivery, and better client–developer collaboration.
