EMC Corporation, a developer of applications for multiple platforms including MVS, UNIX, and Windows/NT, needed a way to design, debug, and test complex Symmetrix storage software that mixed C and Assembler code. The team faced difficult interactions across environments, including channel programming, authorized code, multitasking, and dynamic allocation, making it hard to trace bugs and understand low-level I/O behavior.

ColeSoft Marketing’s XDC tool helped EMC support development with a cross-domain setup that let them run in a near-normal batch environment while using full-screen TSO and XDC features. With help from ColeSoft Marketing and Dave Cole, EMC used conditional breakpoints to track down a hard-to-find storage corruption bug in about an hour after more than a week of effort, and the product became a valuable, high-quality tool for both current and future MVS projects.
