Florida Atlantic University implements Scale-Out Storage for Power VDI environment

Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science moved to VMware Horizon View to replace high-performance physical desktops with 300 non‑persistent virtual desktops serving 3D modeling and other intensive applications for up to 200 concurrent users. Their legacy storage caused high latency that made desktop sessions unusable, so they needed a cost‑effective, simple, and location‑independent storage solution that could meet demanding VDI performance requirements.

FAU deployed the Coho DataStream 1000h, a hybrid flash-and-disk system that eliminated latency without the expense of all‑flash SLC drives and was operational in about 15 minutes. The DataStream delivered the needed 3D VDI performance, enabled a single NFS datastore and online recomposition during business hours, simplified storage management, reduced TCO, and was backed by responsive technical support.
