Sky Lakes Medical Center Avoids Paying Ransom, Lowers PACS TCO

Sky Lakes Medical Center, a not-for-profit teaching hospital serving about 80,000 people in southern Oregon and northern California, faced aging backup and data center infrastructure and a lean IS team that needed a simpler, more efficient data-management approach. After refreshing its data center with Cisco HyperFlex and evaluating backup replacements, the organization was also hit by a major ransomware attack that put its operations and patient care at risk.

Working with CDW, Sky Lakes deployed a validated Cisco–Cohesity solution (Cohesity DataProtect and SmartFiles on Cisco UCS/HyperFlex) to consolidate backup, disaster recovery and file/object services. Immutable snapshots, DataLock and fast, granular restores let the team refuse the ransom and recover systems with no data loss; SmartFiles plus HyperFlex cut PACS TCO, reduced operational overhead, accelerated restores, and strengthened security so staff could focus on patient care.
