Leading UK Building Society Decreases Backup Restore Times over 90% with Cohesity

Principality Building Society, the sixth-largest UK building society with about £11 billion in assets and 500,000 members, needed a more reliable and consolidated IT infrastructure. Head of IT Services Marc Jones was tasked with refreshing storage and backup systems to reduce vendor sprawl and improve recovery performance for the 22-person infrastructure team.

Working with channel partner Softcat, Principality deployed Cohesity (SmartFiles and DataProtect) alongside Pure Storage and Azure, consolidating internal storage arrays from 13 to 4 and growing backup capacity from 20TB to 48TB. The new platform cut administrative time by over 80%, improved data recovery times by more than 90 (restores now take minutes rather than hours), enabled easy file-level restores and Azure archiving, and positioned the society to adopt cloud backup services such as BaaS for Microsoft 365.
