City of Suffolk Greatly Reduces Data Recovery Time with Cohesity

The City of Suffolk, Virginia — a municipal government supporting roughly 90,000 residents across 30 sites and multiple data centers — faced mounting backup and recovery complexity. A mix of legacy tools (Dell Quest Rapid Recovery, NetApp, Tintri, Data Domain) created frequent failures, lengthy rebuilds (up to 48 hours), and gaps in protecting Linux and diverse infrastructure, prompting the need for a single, hyperconverged solution that could also support DR and dev/test.

After a successful Proof of Concept, Suffolk deployed Cohesity DataPlatform and DataProtect to consolidate backup and recovery, rebuild a production Exchange server, and create an off-the-grid lab for dev/test. The result: a single-pane‑of‑glass management across three data centers, global data reduction of 26x, more than $200K in licensing/support savings, and recovery times cut from as long as 48 hours to under 30 seconds, with scalable architecture and expanded Linux and cloud-ready capabilities.
