2degrees New Zealand gets efficient cloud backups

Two Degrees Mobile Limited (2degrees) is a New Zealand telecommunications provider running three data centres and supporting extensive carrier-grade infrastructure across Australia and NZ. After growth through mergers and an explosion of telemetry and CCTV data, legacy platforms and an existing cloud backup product were driving rising costs and slow restores; 2degrees needed a scalable, cloud-native backup solution that could move large data to lower-cost storage, speed VM restores, and reduce S3 storage OpEx through deduplication and compression.

Working with channel partner BEarena, 2degrees ran a three-month Cohesity proof-of-concept and then deployed Cohesity DataProtect, CloudArchive and SmartFiles into production and AWS S3. The solution delivered native cloud deduplication and compression (significantly lowering cloud storage costs), cut backup windows from 10–12+ hours to about two hours (>80% faster), provided NFS storage, encryption at rest and SSO integration, and unlocked data-analysis capabilities for improved security and operational efficiency.
