A Cognition Corporation Case Study
Cummins, a $17B manufacturer of engines and related technologies, needed a cohesive, broadly accessible system to manage complex technical and business processes across product development teams. The company was struggling with “islands of data and activity” spread across tools like Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access databases, and shared drives, making it difficult to manage requirements, evidence, traceability, and cross-functional collaboration. Cognition Corporation’s Cockpit system engineering tool was used to address this need.
Cognition Corporation implemented Cockpit to unify evidence management, requirements management, DFSS/critical parameter management, FMEA support, and test engineering in one web-based, linked model. Cummins said Cockpit significantly lowered the effort needed to become productive, improved traceability from voices to requirements through verification, and supported rapid document authoring through templates and familiar Office-like interfaces. The result was broad adoption with over 900 users, less than one full-time administrator, and measurable usage at scale, including 13–17 concurrent sessions and 1,216 users in the system as of June 18, 2015.
