How Hafslund Eco Avoids Revenue Loss by Optimizing Turbine Start-up Sequences

Hafslund Eco, the largest renewable-only power company in the Nordic region, needed a better way to efficiently start and stop production at one of its hydroelectric plants. During turbine start-up sequences, alarms could interrupt the process and make it difficult for engineers to identify which step caused the issue, creating the risk of lost revenue from downtime. The company used Cognite Data Fusion™ from Cognite to address this challenge.

Cognite enabled live streaming of sensor values and alarms from Hafslund Eco’s control system into Cognite Data Fusion™, and the team built a Grafana dashboard to track start-stop steps, monitor alarms, and flag abnormal process durations. This gave operators faster troubleshooting and better visibility into turbine performance, helping improve uptime and reduce revenue loss. At the Nes plant, which has 250 MW of capacity, every hour of avoided downtime translates into avoided revenue loss for Hafslund Eco.
